Achieve More and Eliminate Stress

Achieve More and Eliminate Stress

It was 4 pm. I had three pages of tasks left to finish. I could feel the acid churning in my stomach. I grabbed a box of tums and sighed in despair. I felt like a hamster running on a wheel.

I had started with a dream to achieve something great with my company. I was working hard and getting lots done. But for some reason I wasn’t happy. Soon my productivity decreased. I was having health issues due to the stress and my relationships were going downhill.

That is when I realized I was so busy focusing on my goal that I had lost sight of the reasons why I was trying to reach it. This issue is common with business owners. That is why so many get divorced and develop serious health issues while building their business.

Worse still is when they reach their goal and still feel unfulfilled. Their drive ended up being an attempt to fill a void.

I’ve found the easiest way to be fulfilled, avoid burnout and increase my productivity is to be balanced in all areas of my life. For most of us there are six main areas that need attention in our lives.

  1. Our Health
  2. Our Financials
  3. Our Relationships
  4. Our Emotional State
  5. Our Personal Growth
  6.  Our Careers / Business

Measure Where You Are Now

The Wheel of Life exercise is an easy way to find out if you need to re-align yourself with any neglected area.

  1. Draw a circle and make six equal sections. I also break relationships into three sub-categories: Significant Other, Family, and Friends.
  2. The center of the circle represents 0% and the outer edge represents 100%. For each category evaluate on a 0-100 where you feel you are at the moment and draw a line across it. Don’t over think it. Just go with your first gut answer. Then shade in the wedges under the lines you just made.
  3. Imagine the shaded area is a tire on your car and you are driving 20 mph – how would the ride be? Pretty uncomfortable and bumpy!
  4. Now imagine you are driving your car at 100mph – what would happen? You would almost certainly lose control and crash.
  5. Now realize that the car ride is really your journey in life. If we are not balanced we run the risk of burning out and “crashing” in our life, especially if we are striving for excellence in any of the categories.

Be Proactive

Remember you don’t need to spend an equal amount of time in each area. You may only need to spend a few hours a week working out and eating more healthy to properly fuel your body. A short 15 minute call to family and friends can go a long way to nurturing those relationships.

However, it is important to be proactive. If you neglect one area for too long, you have to work three times as hard to fix the issues that pop up as a result. And sometimes it is just too late. By simply adding a few items in each area every week you should immediately start to gain more energy, passion and momentum.

Flash forward to today. I am always asked how I achieve so much each week and am rarely if ever stressed. I’m able to handle the challenges that come with running a business and I love what I do. I look forward to each morning and don’t consider “work” to be work. People tell me I get more done in a week than most people do in a month. My secret is I do the Wheel of Life process every single Sunday while I am planning out my week to always maintain perspective on the areas in life that are important to me.
